Walking Tours in Florence

Enjoy a very special walking tour of Florence taking in the highlights of this amazing with city with your local expert guide:  The guide’s flexibility allows for adaptation to your areas of interest. While those who have visited Florence before may have special requests, we suggest the following for a first visit to this city:

  • Piazza della Signoria, one of the most beautiful squares in the world, with its open-air display of masterpieces of Renaissance and Baroque sculpture. The backdrop is the medieval Palazzo Vecchio, the city’s seat of government for over 700 years. Together with your guide, explore the fascinating history of Florence, as the heroes from the Old Testament or Greek mythology, depicted here in marble and bronze, served as political messages for the ruler of the moment.
  • Piazza del Duomo, the Cathedral square, where from the outside we can admire the graceful Gothic bell-tower and the Romanesque baptistery with its beautiful gilded bronze doors. The most famous of the doors are the “Gates of Paradise” by Lorenzo Ghiberti, with their stories from the Old Testament, a masterpiece of the early Renaissance. The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is crowned with its imposing dome, an amazing challenge of engineering to be solved only by the genius of Brunelleschi. We  discuss how the difficulties were to be overcome in the most imaginative of ways.
  • The Ponte Vecchio, or “old bridge” and its tantalizing jewellery shops. Beautiful hand-made gold jewellery is a “centuries-long” tradition in this city, dating back to the pre-Roman era of the Etruscans. This medieval bridge is the oldest spanning the Arno River, offering lovely views of the city and the hills beyond.
  • We also strongly recommend a visit to the Franciscan church of Santa Croce and its neighbourhood. This is the perfect setting for further discussion of the artistic and political history of this great city. The church serves as a pantheon to Italian genius with monuments to such as Michelangelo, Machiavelli and Galileo. There are also fine examples of the work of artists such as Giotto, Donatello and Brunelleschi. The Franciscans’ Leather School still operates in the rooms of the old convent behind the church:  here classes are conducted and fine leather articles are produced and sold. It is possible to observe the master craftsmen and their students at work.
  • You will also discover lesser-known corners of the city, quiet back streets of the neighbourhood, craftsmen’s workshops and curiosities of life in Florence, both present-day and medieval. Here is located one of the city’s most fascinating of workshops where it is possible to watch the masters creatingbeautiful pieces in semi-precious inlaid stone with the same tools and techniques of the past.

The city is so seeped in history, the quality of its artists and craftsmen is so superlative, there are so many delights to discover, you will be left, wanting always more!

Beautiful Buildings of Florence with Expert Guide

3 Hour Tour

This tour will take us to the Cathedral and its surrounding monuments. We enter one of the largest cathedrals in the world and view Vasari’s amazing frescoes of the Last Judgment that adorn the inner dome.

We also admire from the outside the Baptistery of San Giovanni. Three doors in bronze relief make this little building so famous: The south door, of the 14th century, is by Andrea Pisano while the north and east doors are of the 15th century and are by Lorenzo Ghiberti, the last being the renowned Gates of Paradise. Here, in gilt bronze are 10 reliefs of the stories of the Old Testament with Prophets and Sybils. These doors are an intricate work of jewelry and, in fact, Ghiberti’s two doors took him 50 years to execute. If we decide to visit inside the baptistery, we discover a different world, cut off from the bustling city center: elaborate mosaics by Venetian masters line the inner dome and the space conveys an overall harmony of Byzantine flavour.

Outside again, we understand more about life in the Middle Ages as we study Giotto’s campanile and see the headquarters of the Misericordia and those confraternities that line the square still today offering public assistance, just as they did in the past.

Behind the Cathedral lies the Opera del Duomo, the old work-yard of the Cathedral, now a lovely museum, recently restructured. Some of the treasures to be seen include an unfinished Pieta by Michelangelo that he had intended for his own tomb, two enchanting choir boxes by Luca della Robbia and Donatello, as well as Donatello’s eerie Mary Magdalen. Here also are the original panels of Ghiberti’s doors that have been restored after the devastating damage of the flood of 1966.

Costs:

  • Guide for Three Hours:  Euro 276.75
  • Entrance Opera del Duomo Museum per person: Euro 9.60

Left Bank of Florence

4 Hour Tour

Enjoy a wonderful stroll through the Left Bank Side of Florence with your Local Expert Guide taking in the this amazing area as well as the Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens.

Our walk takes us over the Ponte Vecchio to the south side of the Arno River, through the streets of a lesser known part of Florence where tradition survives. The workshops, small boutiques and little squares, make this one of the most delightful quarters of the city. Here, some restoration clinics are working on the elaborate frames for the very paintings we shall be seeing.

The Palazzo Pitti, with its extensive gardens behind, is an impressive complex, housing an immense collection of art in several different museums. The palace was originally built in the 15th century for the wealthy banker Luca Pitti. The Pitti were determined to outrival the Medici: the windows were to be larger than the doors of the Medici. Ironically, when the building costs bankrupted Luca Pitti’s heirs, the Medici purchased the property and began a lengthy project to enlarge and embellish the palace. In 1550, it became the main residence of the Grand-dukes, successively, of the Austrian rulers, of Napoleon’s sister, Elisa and later, of the first King of Italy during that brief period when Florence was capital of the newly formed Kingdom.

The apartments, with their rich decoration, reflect the taste of the various periods. For the Medici, it was an impressive stage for a family that had quickly risen from mere merchants to Grand-dukes, with an aspiration to become the Kings of Tuscany. The Medici’s residence, with its opulent interiors, superlative collections of masterpieces and gardens full of marvels, will be inspiration for the French kings at Versailles and Fontainbleau.

Our visit to the Palatine Gallery takes us through lavish settings with masterpieces of Renaissance painters: such as Raphael, Titian, Rubens. There are beautiful furnishings and delightful views out over the gardens directly behind the palace.

Costs:

  • Guide for 4 hours: Euro 369.00
  • Palatine Gallery: Euro 19.15
  • Boboli Gardens (valid also for visiting the “Horti Pompeiani"): Euro 15.75

'Jewish Florence'

5 Hour Tour

Enjoy a very special introduction to the Highlights of the beautiful area known as ‘Jewish Florence’ with your local expert guide..

As the Jewish community played an important part in Florence, why not explore the areas and places that are relevant to this aspect of the city’s history? This is one of the most interesting and informative tours of Florence. Together, we will see the ex-Jewish Ghetto and Italy’s most beautiful synagogue (Tempio Israelitico) built in the 19th century, at the time of the emancipation of the Jews in Italy.

Nearby, there is also a school, home for the elderly of the community as well as kosher food shops and a simple kosher restaurant of long standing.

The Jews were first welcomed and then persecuted in Florence. The Jewish community in Florence was a political creation, as bankers were invited by the Medici. Jewish philosophy also was of keen interest to some of the great Renaissance philosophers. Jewish translators were needed for texts in Arabic and Hebrew. As the Jewish community’s fate was so closely linked to that of the Medici, our discussion will thread in and out of the general economic and political history of the city.

This tour can also serve as a general introduction to Florence, touching on Piazza della Signoria, the Gates of Paradise at the Cathedral, with their stories of the Old Testament and perhaps even the David by Michelangelo in the Academy of Fine Arts.

Costs:

  • Guide for 4  hours: Euro 369.00
  • Entrance fee to Synagogue, per person: Euro 6.75
  • Optional entrance to David (Open daily, except Mondays): Euro 22.00

Closed Friday afternoons, all day Saturday, and Jewish Holidays.

Michelangelo

8 Hour Tour

Enjoy a very special day, Dedicated to “Michelangelo, The Artist and the Man” with your Local Expert Guide.

An in-depth look at Michelangelo’s works in Florence, the man and his environment. A treasure hunt to discover the masterpieces of this great artist. The personality of the man is soon fleshed out, in an exploration of all aspects of his creative genius, from Sculpture, to Architecture to Poetry. Michelangelo works with a passion until his death at 89 years of age. We can observe Michelangelo as a young man, exploring and asserting himself on the artistic scene in Italy at the peak of the Renaissance. As well, it is interesting to see an older, mature artist working on personal projects, without a commission from the Medici or the Popes.

Michelangelo was also a writer of beautiful sonnets and his own poetry is reflected in his sculpture: what he does with pen on paper often provides the key to better understanding his work with chisel in stone. It is also essential to explore Michelangelo’s environment, that moment of the Renaissance, so rich in inspiration. He emerges as a different kind of artist, but challenged by those that came before him, namely, Brunelleschi and Donatello.  This tour is particularly interesting for those also visiting Rome. (his works there are the Pieta in Saint Peter’s, the Sistine Chapel, Moses in Saint Peter’s in Chains).  Works of the Artist in Florence are located in The Academy of Fine Arts, Bargello, Opera del Duomo, Casa Buonarroti, San Lorenzo Complex with the Medici Chapels. Opening hours vary!

Full-Day Carrara Marble Tour with Sculptor Neal Barab

10 Hour Tour

Michelangelo brought to life his David from the milky white stone of the Carrara marble quarry. The ancient Romans constructed masterpieces including the Pantheon and Trajan’s Column in Rome from it, and moving farther afield London’s Marble Arch is also a product of this versatile and beautiful resource found in the Apuan Alps just a few kilometers from the Versilian coast in Tuscany. This beautiful area has become home to artists and artisans, many of whom have set up studios in the vicinity of the white-capped Apuan alps that a lot of visitors to the area mistake for snow but that is in fact the precious white marble from these working quarries – it is quite a spectacular sight! Not only is the area home to some of the most historically important towns for sculptors and artists, but is also home to a thriving modern-day artistic community, and to really appreciate the beauty of this raw material we will take behind the scenes into a working studio, where sculptors from all over the world set about creating their internationally-acclaimed works displayed from Italy to China, Israel and America. Neal Barab is one of these sculptors and he will be your host today as he takes you on a journey to explore the quarries, the towns of Colonnata, Carrara and Pietrasanta and the inside of his own studio. Neal has lived and worked in Pietrasanta since 1987 and rightly refers to the town as a sculptor’s paradise, not only for the readily available pure white marble, but as he points out, also some of the best marble and granite from all over the world, in all colours imaginable, from green to red to black.

Today you’ll meet Neal at his studio where you’ll not only get to see the artist himself in action, but also have your very own work-stand set up to try your hand at some of the techniques involved in creating stone sculptures. This is perfect not only for adults but for kids too, to get a first-hand taste of what goes in to creating a sculpture. For the very little ones Neal will prepare a piece of Alabaster and some files or else a piece of marble and a sculptor’s hammer and chisel - we assure you you’ll leave with a new appreciation for this art form! The area around Neal’s studio is also just waiting to be explored, and we suggest you let him take you down to the river, where you might just find some interesting remnants and marble fragments. From here we then head out towards the quarries of Colonnata and Carrara while Neal gives you his take on the area, it’s history and current day activity. You’ll have the chance not only to enjoy the panoramic views from the mountain town of Colonnata, peer down into the open quarry but also to see the famous marble portals of the houses here. A stop in the town of Pietrasanta is also a must, with its charming central Piazza del Duomo that leads out on to a series of alleyways lined with artist’s studios, small shops and buildings with those lovely soft ochre-coloured walls that Tuscany is so well-known for. Our day also makes time for a lunch with Neal, in one of his favourite local restaurants, Colonnata is also known for the delicious Colonnata Lard, After a day exploring this fascinating, and surprising area with Neal, he will leave you to enjoy some time at leisure in Pietrasanta before it’s then time to head back to your hotel with your driver.
