St. Croix is both the largest and most remote of the US Virgin Islands. The island features a unique blend of cultural influences (including Great Britain, the Netherlands, France, Malta, and the United States), with the most predominant culture being Danish; the island was part of the Danish West Indies for over 200 years.
Located on the second largest coral reef system in the Caribbean, St. Croix is a spectacular diving destination for beginners and experts alike. Among the colorful reefs, you can spot lobsters, crabs, nurse sharks, and southern stingrays. You can even dive at night, and if you happen to dive during a new moon – when the night sky is at its darkest – you can catch spectacular light displays from marine organisms, a phenomenon called bioluminescence.
Each side of the island offers something different: explore the lush rainforest on the west side, hike the rocky cactus-covered east side, or relax on the beach surrounded by rolling hills and pastures. After you build up an appetite, head to the Danish town of Christiansted, where you'll find beachside restaurants serving up classic Caribbean fare.
