With its exquisite food, well-preserved historical artifacts and penchant for daring artwork, Italy is a natural destination for travelers looking to book luxury rentals in a fun and lively atmosphere. Yet while villas in Italy will provide you with the ultimate in comfortable accommodations, a visit to Villa Rufolo can actually help paint a picture of Italy's history.

Located within the city of Ravello, Villa Rufolo is a large castle that has overlooked the nearby cathedral square since its completion in the 13th century. The structure was originally owned by the Rufolo family, though it has passed through several hands over the years. One of its more notable owners was Scotsman Francis Neville Reid, who, in the 19th century, set out repairing and restructuring the facility into its current iteration.

The villa is well known for its beautiful gardens, which feature numerous perennial and seasonal blooms that ensure that exploring the castle is always a rapturous experience. These grounds made a notable impact on German composer Richard Wagner, who used its beauty as the basis for the garden of Klingsor in the second act of his opera "Parsifal."

While the site is a must see for Italian adventurers, most of us are happy to return to our own villas in Italy, which offer everything from luxurious bedrooms and full kitchens to great locations and infinity pools.
