Swim with Majestic Whale Sharks While Staying in Luxury Rentals

Scuba divers and ocean lovers  share similar dreams of close encounters with marine mammals, and in Cancun, those staying at villas in Mexico have the rare opportunity to swim with whale sharks. These graceful fish are harmless to humans and are notoriously curious, swimming extremely close to snorkelers and scuba divers floating in the shallows. On the small island of Isla Holbox, just a short distance away from your villa in Riviera Maya, whale sharks arrive by the thousands from July to September to feed on the warm-water plankton.

Thanks to a partnership with the World Wildlife Fund, tour operators practice the best methods for divers to have the least amount of environmental impact during these rare encounters. Only three people are allowed to be in the water at a time and no one is allowed to feed or ride the sharks as they make their way through the tropical ocean. Additionally, divers are forbidden from submerging themselves beneath the aquatic creatures for the safety of both the viewer and the shark.

July is the best month for whale shark encounters, due to the abundance of plankton found in the waters off of Isla Holbox. The largest fish in the ocean, whale sharks grow to an average of 15 tons and extend to nearly 50 feet in length. Their unique spots make them look like an aquatic jaguar, and if you have underwater camera gear, you may have the chance to take spectacular photographs.

There are other sea dwellers that are equally fantastic, such as the large manta rays that grow to nearly 25 feet from wing to wing. Harmless to swimmers, mantas usually fly through the shallow waters as they catch small fish in their gaping mouths. Of course, the waters off of Cancun and Riviera Maya are teeming with colorful tropical fish, which can be seen throughout the year.

After spending the day in the sun, those who rent luxury villas such as the Casa Vela need not worry about leaving the tropical Mexican sands. This cottage-like beach bungalow is perfect for couples to relax in privacy as they enjoy their modern barbecue grill - perfect for a post-dive meal. Just steps away from the beach and surrounded by diverse ecosystems, Casa Vela is an ideal getaway for travelers who want to experience true serenity with nature.
