Off the Beaten Track

Closer to the African coast than the Italian mainland, Sardinia feels distinctly less “Italian” than other regions, offering a unique experience for travelers looking for an off-the-beaten-track vacation.

The glitzy Emerald Coast on the island's northeast corner is a favorite among royalty and movie stars for its posh, unspoiled beaches, but the interior landscape is equally breathtaking. Unique prehistoric ruins can be found alongside rugged mountains peppered with caves and grottos, acres of citrus and olive groves, broad valleys of wheat pastures, and intimate, centuries-old villages filled with history.

Sardinia, with its glamorous northern coast, its lively capital, Cagliari, in the south, and its picturesque towns, truly has something for everyone.

Insider Tips

If you're interested in history, take some time to visit Su Nuraxi di Barumini. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, Su Nuraxi di Barumini is an ancient archaeological site that dates all the way back to the 16th century BC. The site's name translates to "the nuraghe," a common type of defensive structure found throughout the region during the Bronze Age. Today, the site is a large complex of ancient structures centering on a three-story tower that rises from the earth. Since its discovery in the 1950's, much of the area has been excavated, revealing many secondary structures and providing the best timeline for the prehistoric roots of Sardinia.
